Using workouts as a form of weight loss is a great idea. Although diet plays a major role in loosing weight you can really optimize your weight loss goals by incorporating some workouts to facilitate the loss of fat.

Notice I said the loss of fat -- not muscle!

Lose Fat - Not Muscle

That's one of the key advantages of working out while you lose weight. Doing so will ensure that you lose mostly fat and not muscle. This way you get that toned sculpted look and not just 'skinny'. Below are some things to think about when considering weight loss workouts.

As with exercise in general there are many types of workouts that you can try.

Men

For men especially you might want to look at how to build muscle in the larger muscles of the body, the legs

Women

These can be effective for women as well. And don't worry ladies you won't have the problem of getting too bulky, it's difficult as it is to gain muscle let alone a large amount of it.

The goal is to get more muscle in your body to raise your daily caloric needs.

This means you body burns off more calories due to the fact that muscle requires more energy to sustain itself than fat does. So even if you eat the same you can still lose weight simply by having more muscle, sounds pretty good doesn't it?

Diet Is Still Important

Of course it will still be a good idea to look at your diet and make sure you aren't eating more calories than you need. When you combine a sensible diet and adding some muscle you end up with a great combination for losing weight and feeling much better.

Another area of workouts for weight loss is to do aerobic exercise like running.

One of the most effective forms of this is HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training.

This consists of short bursts of exercises that really get your metabolism going and is one of the quickest ways to shed pounds. You'll save a lot of time over something like the usual slower paces jogging that most people do.

Same or better results with less time, something that I'm sure most people would be happy with.
